Post-war Germany in 1946. Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) arrives in the ruins of bombed-out Hamburg to meet her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city, where chaos and despair still reign.
As they make their way to their new home, Rachael is unpleasantly surprised by an unexpected decision Lewis has made - they will share the house with its previous German owner, Stefan Lubert (Alexander Skarsgard), and his teenage daughter, Freda (Flora Thiemann). Rachael lost her son in German air raids on London during the war, and so sees living with a recent enemy as unthinkable.
A strong tension develops between her and Stefan. When she discovers that he, too, suffered a great personal loss during the war, her attitude begins to change. And duty-bound Lewis discovers only too late that her initial rejection and grief have been replaced by passion and betrayal...
