Mark Hogancamp is the victim of a brutal mugging in which he suffers a severe head injury resulting in memory loss. Mark's medical and, above all, psychological condition seems incurable and his memories of the past are lost forever. He is paranoid and has great difficulty communicating with the outside world.
In a desperate attempt to find balance and the past, he begins to intuitively create a new world and an alternative life within it. In his house and garden he builds a quaint, shrunken city called Marwen and populates it with puppets, among whom Mark is the only male and therefore the main character, protected and saved by the female heroines. And there is a need for that, because the town of Marwen exists in the raging Second World War and the invading Nazis have no mercy for anyone.
Fortunately, the puppet Mark and his brave friends in Marwen also fight the SS thugs without any mercy. But when the real Mark is asked to testify against the men who attacked him, his demons return...
