The heroine of the film is a proletarian woman and mother. Her husband, a coal miner, falls into alcoholism and neglects his work. After his dismissal, he spends most of his time in a pub, where he spends the money his wife earned as a laundress with her friends and his mistress, a waitress. In the midst of her work and worries, his wife doesn't even remember it's her birthday, but the neighbours come to congratulate her. However, even this joyful day ends sadly: the man returns drunk again. When, in a fit of rage, he starts destroying the poor household furnishings, the woman drives him away. The man moves in with his mistress. One day, the woman is badly scalded while doing laundry and dies a few days later. The man returns home and gives her a simple funeral, which is attended by all the neighbours. After the funeral, the man treats them at a nearby inn. Then they all return to their homes as if nothing had happened. After all, that's life...
