Forty years after the Spider-Man cartoon series first appeared, Spider-Man is now a movie hero. Student Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) became an orphan at an early age, so he is raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. He lives the life of a normal student in Queens: he works as a photographer for the school newspaper, lusts after the beautiful Mary Jane Watson and spends a lot of time with his friend Harry Osborne. During an experiment at school, he is bitten by a genetically altered spider and Peter soon discovers that he has unusual powers and abilities. At first he wants to use them to raise money, but in the face of a tragedy that strikes near his home, he decides to fight crime. He takes Uncle Ben's words to heart: "With great power comes great responsibility." Meanwhile, megalomaniacal businessman Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe), Harry's father, also begins to change. Only his experiment doesn't work out the way he wanted. While his intelligence and strength also grow, he also goes mad. He becomes the Green Goblin, Spider-Man's greatest enemy, who puts Peter's resolve to fight crime and help innocent people to the test...
