The historical epic film about the Roman slave revolt of 74-71 BC was based on the novel of the same name by American writer Howard Fast. It follows the fortunes of the rebellious slave Spartacus, from his liberation from the Libyan mines, when he is sold to the gladiator trainer Batiatus, for whom he must fight in the Roman arena. Here he falls in love with the slave Varinia.
One day, however, Spartacus rebels against his master and with a retinue of other gladiators he traverses the cities in search of freedom. His army grows stronger and gradually moves to the south of Italy, where he wants to cross the sea and return home. Meanwhile, in Rome itself, the slave revolt becomes a decisive element in the political struggle between the senators, who want to take advantage of the situation to increase their own power. The victorious struggles of Spartacus over the more numerous armies of the Romans must one day inevitably be replaced by defeat...
