Primal Fear (1996)
Director Gregory Hoblit brings a gripping legal thriller from 1996 that explores the complex intersection of morality, law, and psychology. In the lead role, Richard Gere plays Martin Vail, an experienced lawyer who takes on the defense of Aaron (Edward Norton), a young, mentally impaired boy accused of brutally murdering a cardinal. Aaron is initially confused and strangely silent, which raises Vail’s suspicions. As the investigation progresses, Vail begins uncovering dark and disturbing truths about Aaron’s past and his role in the crime. What ensues is a complex legal and psychological battle, in which the lines between victim and perpetrator begin to blur. Featuring a brilliant performance by Edward Norton, who earned an Oscar nomination for his role, and a stunning portrayal by Laura Linney, the film offers not only tension but a deep dive into the strength of the human psyche.
