Passion is a force against which we are powerless. A nostalgic romance about love that ignited in the harsh environment of the New Zealand wilderness. Mute Ada and her illegitimate daughter Flora arrive from England to meet a new man in the inhospitable surroundings of white settlers. She brings with her a beloved piano, without which she cannot exist.
The strange, withdrawn and soulful woman is at odds with her merchant husband Stewart. Gradually, however, she succumbs to the gentle pressure of another man who has bought her instrument from Stewart. Obsessively in love, Baines gradually sells the Piano to her, and she pays for it with increasing looseness. However, this is less and less enforced; later, a consummated love affair results in a violent reaction from the deceived husband.
Nature is extremely hostile to the white settlers: it rains constantly and there is mud everywhere. The sea is always rough, the thick trees and scrub are difficult to penetrate. The relationships between the various characters are ambiguous and their characters are difficult to decipher...
