Stanley Kubrick's The Lead Vest is one of a wave of films in the second half of the 1980s that took on the theme of the Vietnam War (e.g. Oliver Stone's Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July). This masterful film takes place in two chapters of equal length, the protagonist of which is an intelligent soldier nicknamed the Joker.
The first part takes place at a Marine Corps training center in South Carolina, where the sadistic instructor Hartman mentally and physically abuses the recruits in his charge. Not everyone is able to survive such drills and maintain a sound mind. The second part takes place on the Vietnam front, where even the Joker has to resort to the worst act...
