Garbo's talking! the commercials proclaimed when silent film star Greta Garbo made her sound film debut. Nine years and twelve classic movie dramas later, the talented film legend was ready for a new change. Garbo is laughing! promised publicity for her first comedy, a sparkling tale of a stern Russian commissar who traded her femininity for Soviet brotherhood - until she fell in love with a dashing Parisian socialite (Melvyn Douglas). Ernst Lubitsch, working with a subtly caustic script co-written by Billy Wilder, knew better than anyone how to combine sophistication with great wit. ‘Even the most dignified human being is funny at least twice a day,’ he explained his famous ‘Lubitsch Touch.’ And that's exactly how we see Greta Garbo's Ninotchka in love: as quietly dignified yet endearingly ridiculous. You'll see her the same way.
