A ruthlessly realistic look at the American West depicts former gunslinger and robber Munny coming to terms with his past. His gun has been silent for eleven years, and the worn-out man tries to take the best care of his children and his farm on the Kansas prairie. One day, a prostitute is slashed in a nearby town. The perpetrators are two cowboys who are symbolically "sentenced" by the local sheriff to pay a fine of seven horses. The other girls, however, put up a bounty for the disposal of the two cowboys. The substantial sum prompts the Schofield Kid to seek out Munny and ask for his cooperation.
