From the start, the eighteen-year-old had to defend her throne from rebellious Scottish clans, plus she faced open hostility from the clan-aligned Queen Elizabeth of England (Margot Robbie), whose rule she refused to acknowledge. The aversion was mutual, with Elizabeth resenting Mary not only as a rebellious rival but also as the mother of the future King James. For the English monarch's prospects in this respect were, for many reasons, poor.
On the other hand, the two monarchs were united by their isolation in an all-male environment, thanks to which they gained mutual understanding, even respect.
