An underground elevator took Thomas to a meadow surrounded by high walls. He has no memory of anything, not even his own name at first. As soon as he arrives, he is greeted by a group of other young men who have suffered the same fate before. They have formed a strange community, trying to survive in this strange place while tirelessly searching for an escape route. They have a chance to escape every morning when a huge gate opens in the wall. However, this only allows them to enter the vast and ever-changing maze that surrounds their new home. The best and bravest runners seek a way out, gradually mapping out the different parts of the labyrinth. They only have time to do this in the daylight, the gate closes in the evening and those who do not make it back in time will not survive between the walls of the labyrinth. All that remains is a crossed-out name carved on the wall. At night, the labyrinth turns into a terrifying place full of all sorts of traps, which make the probability of survival in its bowels limiting to zero. Yet Thomas is constantly drawn to the maze. Maybe it's because he's different from the other boys. He's the only one who has strange dreams about the past and about a mysterious organization hidden under the acronym W.C.K.D. Moreover, it is his name that is shouted out by a new passenger who is brought in on the next elevator. To everyone's surprise, it's not a boy, but a girl. And she may hold the key to the gates of their prison...
