The film tells the story of Walt Kowalski, a tenacious war veteran who, as he grows older, realizes that he is no longer up to the new world. He must confront both his neighbours of different ethnic backgrounds and his deep-seated prejudices. All the old neighbours have been gradually replaced by immigrants, whom Walt despises from the bottom of his heart. Thus, the autumn of his life is lived rather than lived. Until the night someone tries to steal his pride and joy - a shiny Gran Torino sports car.
The car's sleek shape impresses Walt's irrepressible neighbour Thao, who tries to win the respect of a group of young troublemakers by stealing it. Thao's family insists that the boy work off his indiscretion with Walt. Walt eventually relents and urges the young man to channel his activities for the benefit of the neighborhood. Thanks to Thao and his kind-hearted family, Walt comes to see the light and, perhaps for the first time in his life, views his neighbors without prejudice. Gradually, the veteran uncovers a part of his soul that he has been hiding since the war...
