Matt King's (Clooney) quiet Hawaiian life begins to crumble when his wife is in a coma after an accident. The father of two daughters, precocious ten-year-old Scottie and seventeen-year-old rebel Alexandra, who until now has served only as a "backup" parent, suddenly has to cope with the knowledge that he must raise his own children alone. And that will be a difficult task for a man who hasn't been parenting up to now, and one that certainly won't make his "kids" any easier. On the contrary.
During one acrimonious exchange, Alexandra reveals to her distraught father that her mother crashed during a romantic boat trip with her lover. A blow between the eyes like that can make a man do anything, leading Matt to decide to find his wife's lover, not really knowing what he'll do with him when he does. During this cathartic, fun, and complicated journey, with his daughters accompanying him, he realizes that what was seemingly broken by his wife's accident, a solid family, was broken long before. And that he is the only one who can fix it. But he has to want to.
