John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) and James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp) grew up together on the streets of South Boston. Decades later, in the second half of the 1970s, they were to meet again. At the time, Connolly was a major figure in the Boston FBI office and Whitey became the godfather of the Irish Mob. A dirty deal was struck between the two involving trade secrets and the simultaneous liquidation of the Boston-Italian mob, which spiraled out of control, leading to murder, drug dealing and extortion.
