Buddy (Jude Hill) is a nine-year-old boy who feels he owns the world, which is currently confined to the streets of his native Belfast. Here, he experiences true boyhood adventures and first love (or rather, he clumsily tries to). When he needs advice, he can turn to his grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds), when he needs a scraped knee tended to or a hug, he has a loving mum (Caitriona Balfe) to give him one, and his dad (Jamie Dornan) is there to give Buddy someone to look up to in the first place. However, the neat, safe and comprehensible world of the late 1960s begins to be disrupted by the social and religious conflicts that sweep across Belfast and inevitably visit their street. The heroes and villains that Buddy and his friends have only played at being until then are suddenly everywhere. Where will Buddy's family belong in this transformed world?
