Anaconda (USA / Brazil / Peru, 1997), directed by Luis Llosa, is an adventurous horror thriller and one of the most famous “creature feature” films of the 1990s, gradually earning the status of a cult genre classic.
A documentary crew, led by determined director Terri Flores (Jennifer Lopez) and anthropologist Steven Cale (Eric Stoltz), ventures deep into the Amazon jungle. Their goal is to film a unique documentary about the lost Shirishamas tribe. However, their expedition unexpectedly crosses paths with the charismatic yet mysterious hunter Paul Sarone (Jon Voight). He convinces the crew to assist him in his obsessive mission – to track and capture a massive anaconda, the legendary predator feared even by the local tribes. It soon becomes clear that Sarone is willing to risk everyone’s lives to achieve his goal, turning the expedition into a tense fight for survival, threatened not only by the ruthless nature and the deadly snake but also by betrayal within the group itself.
The film impresses not only with its exotic setting and suspenseful atmosphere but also with its technical execution – the enormous snake was created using a combination of animatronic effects and state-of-the-art CGI for the time. The strong cast, led by Jennifer Lopez, Eric Stoltz, Jon Voight, and Ice Cube, adds energy and unforgettable moments, with supporting roles played by Owen Wilson and Danny Trejo.
Upon its release, Anaconda received mixed reviews from critics, but audiences embraced it enthusiastically. The film became a box office hit, launched an entire series, and is still regarded as a prime example of an adventurous monster movie, skillfully combining tension, exotic locales, and entertaining exaggeration.
This title is now available in a premium 4K UHD Steelbook edition, offering fans not only the highest quality picture and sound but also an attractive collector’s packaging, allowing viewers to enjoy the film in a form befitting a cult classic.
