Still the best of all science fiction films, 2001: A Space Odyssey is our countdown to tomorrow, a map to humanity's destiny, a quest for infinity. A mesmerizing visual experience, this Academy Award-winning film captures the compelling drama of man and machine's struggle, a breathtaking blend of music and movement, a film so influential that Steven Spielberg likened it to the "big bang" of a new generation of filmmakers. It is arguably director Stanley Kubrick's major masterpiece (with Arthur C. Clarke, he also co-wrote the screenplay) . ... that will astonish, inspire and captivate generations. At the beginning of his journey from the future, Kubrick visits our prehistoric ape ancestors, then transports across the millennia (in one of the most stunning cuts of all time) to colonized space, and finally plunges astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into the unexplored realm of outer space and perhaps immortality.
